THIS WEEKEND and NEXT MONTH!

Friends,
if you haven't gotten an e-mail, heard the chatter, seen the promotion on facebook, been visited in your dreams, or been following us on twitter (shame on you); this Saturday, September 22nd, is the first Phantom Hand group exhibition since the shuttering of our gallery, A Nation of Evil Men 2, upstairs at Tattooed Mom.  Clear your schedule, chain the kids in the yard, and get a sitter for the pooch; this one's gonna be a doosy!

"Phantom Hand and Tattooed Mom presents the second installment of an expose of the faces of evil that make history grimly entertaining. A collection of the debased, comically villainous, perverted, violent, controversial, and grotesque figures that were truly stranger than fiction. These faces and persona have been the fodder for a million books, movies, history channel specials, and bad jokes; A Nation of Evil Men will bring them all together for your viewing pleasure."

7:00PM-2:00AM // 530 South Street, Philadelphia // Upstairs, 21+ with ID

Hot on the heels of A Nation of Evil Men is Halloween, also at Tattooed Moms. If that doesn't make you wet, check your pulse. More info forthcoming.

NEW EXHIBITIONS ANNOUNCEMENT

Artists and friends of the Phantom,

Hope you're all well and as excited as we are to be able to once again be sending out invites for two upcoming Phantom Hand shows. Only the date and place have been set, but more details will follow in the weeks to come. For the time being, save the dates!

A Nation Of Evil Men 2 - Saturday, September 22nd
(Halloween TBA) - Saturday, October 27th
Both at Tatooed Mom - 530 South Street, Philadelphia

Tatooed Moms had been incredibly supportive of Phantom Hand while we had a physical location, and they invited us with open arms to show in their space when we lost ours. If you're unfamiliar with A Nation Of Evil Men, it was originally hosted by Shawn Hileman at Masthead Print Studio. Some words from the press release:

"Masthead, ASOP and the Philly Cartoonist Society presents an expose of the faces of evil that make history grimly entertaining.

The work at the first installment of this show was an amazing collection and this time around we'd like to top it ten-fold. Please note the show involved a fair share of Evil Women. As for the Halloween show, the specifics have yet to be set in stone, but it's going to be a blast regardless. More soon folks, I promise.

THIS IS IT // SATURDAY NIGHT

Folks,
Hope you're all well. We're currently halfway through our last week showing a full roster of artists at Phantom Hand, and THIS SATURDAY, May 19th, is our big closing party. Hopefully you marked your calendar and got a dog/child sitter the moment we announced the date, but if not, you can let us know you're going HERE. If for some reason our closing is news to you, please see the post prior to this. The party is starting at 4:30; we're going to put as much of the remaining art on the walls as possible, this is the last night of Plastopia, starting at 7:00 we'll be hosting the traveling minstrels Sharkula, Still, and Fire in the Hearts, there'll be plenty of beer, Mama Heimer is making a batch of baked goods, food/drink donations are welcome, and we're going to do what we did every 3rd Saturday and 4th Friday for the past six months; pretend we're looking at art but really gawk at the weirdos walking down South Street through the big, dirty gallery windows with beers in our hands chanting "we look at you till you look at us". I guarantee a good time. If you have other Saturday night obligations, stop by anyway, this one is going to go into the wee hours.

As far as the Phantom from here on out; we're been getting offers, making connections, and have some solid leads for the future. We'll be back. We always come back.

Patrons who bought art but have yet to pick it up in a timely manner; COME GET IT! You have till the 26th.

Artists: Pickup/payout beings THIS SUNDAY. See the post prior to this for the details, and please, don't forget to pickup your work. As much as the probable hair-braiding/bong emporium/hat store taking our space would enjoy your work, I'd rather see it go back to you.

And once again, thank YOU ALL so much for your support.

Kisses,
The Phantom Handy

End of the Line for the PHANTOM

Friends,

Hope you're all well. If you haven't heard the sad news already; PHANTOM HAND is closing its doors early. As per our lease/grant agreement, if a business/person decides to rent our space, our lease is terminated. This has happened, and we must vacate the space by June 1st. There is a slight chance Arts on South will find us relocation to finish out our term, but due to timing, cost, manpower, and the likely small size of a replacement, we are considering this the end of Phantom Hand. We do aim to resurrect the Phantom in other forms in the not too distant future, but for now, we'd like to make the most of the time we have left at 604 South Street.

May 5th - Plastopia; The Work of Moo Noo opening reception/solo exhibit 6:00-10:00 PM
May 6th - Life Drawing at Phantom Hand with live model  4:00- 7:00 PM. $7 per person. Bring your own easel.
May 19th - Plastopia closing reception and END OF THE LINE PHANTOM HAND IS CLOSING PARTY 4:30-??? Folks, please help us go out in style and haunt our halls one last time. We've got 2 bands booked, with more possible (starting at 7 PM), we're going to put up most of our remaining art-work, a bunch of MooNoo madness still on the walls, fill the coolers, and have one last crazy night of art and cheap beer. We'll supply beer and baked goods, but potluck action/donations of food and drink would be greatly appreciated.

ARTISTS! (please read carefully)
Artwork and payment for work sold needs to be picked up starting Sunday, May 20th 12:00-6:00 PM, and can be picked up the 23rd, 24th, and 25th, 3:00-8:00 PM, Saturday the 26th 12:00-8:00 PM, and Sunday the 27th 12:00-6:00 PM.
We would like to continue showing your work up to the closing party the 19th, but if you cannot make any of the above dates, artwork and payment to date can be picked up at your convenience during regular gallery hours. Phantom Hand is not responsible for unpicked-up artwork/payment from beyond the grave, so please make note of the above dates, and if you cannot come in person, arrange for a friend to collect your work.

We are proud to have given the Low-Brow arts of Philadelphia a home for 6 months. We could not have done it without Amanda Cameron and the folks at Arts on South, our organizers, our army of amazing participating artists, friends, and the thousands of philadelphians and tourists who found us by chance; Thank you all so much. Keep an ear to the ground; Phantom's never die, they're already dead.

Safe Harbor,
Sam Heimer

The MONTH of MAY at PHANTOM HAND

Folks,
Hope you're as excited about the forthcoming schedule (see here) as we are. So here's some more details on what's happening at the Phantom in the next few weeks.
April 21st, Saturday 6:00PM-10:00 PM - Closing reception for Mythology & the Forgotten Gods
April 27th, Friday 6:00PM-10:00 PM - Opening reception SPRING CLEANING
The odds and ends, bastard children and misfits, christmas-tree stands and rusted yard tools of Heather Gargon, Julie Laquer, Julianna Lose, Christine Larsen, Greg Pizzoli, JP Flexner, Tim Durning, Alex Eckman-Lawn, James Heimer, Matt Weikel, Anthony Pedro, Eamon Dougherty, Sam Heimer, and other Phantom Hand artists.
We're cleaning out our closets and flat-files before Phantom Hand kicks off an amazing show schedule for the summer. Help us make room for some new artwork and check out original inked pages, limited edition prints, and paintings; new and slightly used.
May 5th, Saturday 6:00PM-10:00 PM - Opening reception Plastopia; Visual Works by MooNoo
More info on this coming.
May 25th, Friday 6:00PM-10:00 PM - Opening reception Lady Like
Curated by Stephanie Struse.

Make no mistake; the plight of the female artist has certainly been a trying one over the course of history. Indeed, it has taken many, many years for male and female artists to coexist- at least from the standpoint of the mainstream, westernized canon. All grievances aside, it is with happy hearts that we can say today, these biases between the sexes seem to be dissipating significantly, if not altogether. Ladylike: An All-Female Exhibition is not a show of exclusionary connotations; rather it is one that simply celebrates lady artists in the here and now, and what their contributions ultimately mean for the future of the arts.

Also, we're having another drink and draw with a live model. We've been getting asked left and right when the next one would be, and this time around it'll likely be on a Sunday afternoon early in May. Ample notice will be given.

That's all for now folks. Hope to see you this Saturday night at the closing.

Mythology Closing // Up-And-Coming Event Announcements

Photo: Julie Laquer
Friends of the Phantom,
Hope you're all well. A bit late, but thank you all too much, the artists, patrons, organizers, beer-swilling myth-mongers, and Anthony Pedro (curator) for making Mythology and the Forgotten Gods a runaway success. The participating artists brought their A game, and the opening was packed from start to finish. If you missed out on this exhibition, come rub elbows with the art and artists one last night at the closing reception, Saturday, April 21st, 6PM-10PM. Below, a few samples of work from the show, and after the purty pictures, some vague suggestions as to programming for the coming four months at Phantom Hand.

7/21 - Greetings From... / Nevada Hill closing reception
7/27 - Top Secret The Phantom's going out with a Bang Last Event at Phantom Hand; This is going to be a big to-do. Two bands already booked and an extensive, mind-blowing artist invite list is being culled from galleries all over Philadelphia.

Along with the above, we will be hosting an event in support of Christian Patchell's book I Put the Can in Cancer, a few more figure-drawing nights hosted by Paul Palcko (see photo below), Pictionary and Drink and Draws on the weekends over the summer, and possibly; a city-spanning Art-Crawl.

More soon folks. Hope to see you on the 21st.

STICK AROUND A BIT LONGER...

It's with great pleasure that we announce PHANTOM HAND has been granted an extension for being an 'exemplary member' of the Arts on South program. We will now be in our current location regaling you with art and assorted hand-made sundries and occasional free beer and baked-goods until mid-August.

If you're the celebrating type, come on out this Friday, to the opening of Mythology and the Forgotten Gods, and help us stoke the flame of low-brow art and ancient rites as a christening of another four months till the fates cut our yarn.

PULP LOVE and SHOW CLOSING DOUBLE FEATURE at PHANTOM HAND

This Friday, February 24th, come feel the grimy, vintage love at Phantom Hand with the opening of PULP LOVE, curated by Jeffro Kilpatrick and Eamon Dougherty.

"The Pulp magazines from the old days is where the hardboiled detective was born, and featured stories set in the Jungles of Tarzan, the orbits of Mars even the saloons and deserts of the old west. This February, Philadelphia artists are borrowing from that wealth of cheap and lurid culture, and giving it a shot with cupid's arrow for a belated Valentine's Day celebration! What would a yegg and his moll do for a romantic evening after robbing the bank? What if the space damsel in distress falls for her robot alien suitor? Come find out in an exhibition that pulls from the vast wealth of Pulp genres and puts a romantic spin on it."

Afterwards, come have a drink with some of the participating artists at the after-party, upstairs at Tattooed Moms. Drink Specials, 21+ with ID.

ALSO, tomorrow night, 2/18, is the closing reception for Artificial Dissemination 2; Propaganda to Popaganda and Braulio Amado's Houdini, 6:00PM-10:00PM. Come out and get your propaganda and escapist bondage on before the shows are gone!

Braulio Amado's HOUDINI // Opening Reception

This past Saturday Phantom Hand hosted the opening reception for Braulio Amado's traveling show, 'Houdini'. A few words about the show and Braulio:

"Houdini is a travelling exhibition by Braulio Amado. Inspired by the greatest magician that ever lived, the series alludes to abstract universes and fantasies, exploring mind tricks and the possibilities of the impossible. The pieces invoke the unexpected and draw from raging sounds, like those of the Melvin's "Houdini" record. Expect weird stuff.

Braulio Amado is a portuguese kid born in '87 who recently moved to NYC. He works as a graphic designer for Pentagram Design and is the director of "Pedal," a free monthly newspaper in Portugal. He plays music and tours the world with his band "Adorno."

Check out Braulio's work here:
http://www.iusecomicsans.com/

An awesome night was had. Special thanks to Braulio for bringing his great work (and a gaggle of New Yorkers), the Phantom crew, and everybody who came out to support Braulio, the gallery, and our exhibiting artists.
The closing reception for Houdini and Artificial Dissemination 2 is Saturday, February 18th 6:00-10:00.
