PHANTOM HAND reopens for 2012 this coming Wednesday at 2PM. Along with two events this month, we've got new art coming in every day in preparation for the closing of the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society's Out to Dry 3, followed closely by the opening reception for Artificial Dissemination 2; Propaganda to Popaganda.

The inaugural show at PHANTOM HAND, presented by the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society. This show consists of sketchbook pages, limited edition prints, inked pages, and framed work from several dozen artists. Because the opening reception was such a runaway success, with over 120+ pieces of art leaving the gallery, a second wave of art has been called for, so the closing will be a slightly different collection than the opening. Come out and help us wrap up an amazing start to our four exhibition run.

Artificial Dissemination 2 // Opening Reception // Friday, January 27th 6:00 PM-???

The second installment of Artificial Dissemination; Propaganda to Popaganda is an exhibition devoted to Propaganda Posters. Last year Masthead Print Studio hosted the first Artificial Dissemination: Dissent on Paper; If in an alternate universe a band of scruffy, beer-swilling artists were the resistance, fighting the tyrant regime of Kindle, Septa, and Homophobes, Artificial Dissemination would have been a fair cross-section of the posters wheat-pasted all over their city.The social commentary in poster-form ranged from warnings about the pitfalls of witchcraft, retaining imagination, and the true nature of religion, to local jabs and the bizarre. This coming January, the rules are the same: subjects will range from political/social issues to jabs at celebrity and pop culture. See images from the first AD exhibition HERE.

A Very PHANTOM Christmas

 Last night's inaugural opening at PHANTOM HAND was a massive success. One-hundred and twenty pieces of artwork left the gallery, and hundreds of friends and Philadelphia arts patrons packed the gallery from 6 to 2AM. Because this was a cash and carry show and the art was so affordable, the work was flying off the walls so quickly the gallery staff practically had to run to fill the holes. Out to Dry 3 (The portion that is left) will continue to be on the walls at PHANTOM HAND until the third week of January. Sadly, if you did not make it out to the opening, and earlier on in the night, you missed out on the show in it's full splendor and pomp, before being carried away piece by piece by art-fiends twisted on Narraganset and pumpkin loaf.

Special thanks to everybody who came out to support the gallery, all the participating artists, the organizers James Heimer, Sam Heimer, Anthony Pedro, Alex Eckman-Lawn, Matt Weikel, and Jeff Daniels, Amanda Cameron and Arts on South, Jeffro Kilpatrick for his art and wisdom, Chris Heimer for the holiday baked goods, Matt Cavanaugh for the pizza and 'Sam Masks', and Narraganset Beer for keeping the part going into the morning with their donation.

PHANTOM HAND will be closed until the first Wednesday of the New Year, and from then on will be keeping regular hours of Wednesday/Thursday 2PM-8PM, Friday/Saturday/Sunday 2PM-10PM. The next exhibition we will be hosting is Artificial Dissemination 2; Propaganda to Popaganda, late January. Stop in often as new work will be arriving regularly.

HANGING

Last night was our first chance to get into the new space, start cleaning up, rearranging, and accepting and hanging art. Over 200 pieces of art were hung, with more on deck, and several artists coming tonight with more artwork. The work ranges from pages from personal sketch-books, screen-prints, inked pages, studies, portraits, collage, digital prints, and full on paintings. From a tiny 3 inch by 3 inch canvas to a massive framed painting about 5 feet by 2.5 feet, the arts runs the gamut, covers all the bases, and takes a little bit of everything from the buffet, ranging in size, style, medium, and price. This Friday's opening of Out To Dry 3 is going to be epic, worthy of missing an hour of eggnog and shitty sweaters to stop by and check out the work.

Inagural show at PHANTOM HAND

PHANTOM HAND, a new artist-run, artist-curated gallery space will be kicking off a four exhibition run hosting The Philadelphia Cartoonist Society's Out To Dry 3. The third installment in the Out to Dry Series, these shows are collections of sketch-book pages, limited edition prints, and past works. Offering a multitude of work in various mediums and format, from dozens of PCS members and friends, the work is exceptionally diverse, and affordable. This show will act as an introduction of sorts to the artists that will be showing and curating shows at PHANTOM HAND from December to April 2011, as well as hosting drawing parties, book-releases, and offering prints, books, and shirts in the shop section of the gallery. Out to Dry 3 is a 'cash and carry' exhibition, no waiting till the show closes to take your purchased art home, so if you need extremely last minute Christmas gifts for loved ones, stop by the opening and give the gift of art.
